Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.5.1, and 4, and Silverlight 4 before 4.1.10111, does not properly restrict access to memory associated with unmanaged objects, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (aka XBAP), (2) a crafted ASP.NET application, (3) a crafted .NET Framework application, or (4) a crafted Silverlight application, aka ".NET Framework Unmanaged Objects Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 02/14/2012 by Jeroen Frijters with Sumatra as MS12-016 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0014 since 11/09/2011. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57950 (MS12-016: Vulnerabilities in .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2651026)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90774 (Microsoft .NET Framework and Silverlight Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-016)).

Applying the patch MS12-016 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
