A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Visio 2002/2003/2007 (Image Processing Software). This issue affects some unknown processing. Microsoft Office Visio 2002 SP2, 2003 SP3, and 2007 SP1 does not properly validate object data in Visio files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file, aka "Memory Validation Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 02/10/2009. The weakness was released 02/10/2009 by Bing Liu with Fortinet (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0095 since 01/08/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35633 (MS09-005: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957634)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90479 (Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (MS09-005)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6785.
