Details
A vulnerability was found in Eyrie pam-krb5 up to 3.12. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component Configuration File. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Russ Allbery pam-krb5 before 3.13, when linked against MIT Kerberos, does not properly initialize the Kerberos libraries for setuid use, which allows local users to gain privileges by pointing an environment variable to a modified Kerberos configuration file, and then launching a PAM-based setuid application.
The bug was discovered 02/11/2009. The weakness was disclosed 02/13/2009 by Russ Allbery (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0360 since 01/29/2009. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Jon Oberheide in ANSI C and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35662 (Debian DSA-1721-1 : libpam-krb5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185079 (HP-UX Running PAM Kerberos Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02415)).
Upgrading to version 2.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (48735), Exploit-DB (8303), Tenable (35662), SecurityFocus (BID 33740†) and OSVDB (54343†). The entry VDB-46528 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
