The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Russ Allbery pam-krb5 before 3.13, as used by libpam-heimdal, su in Solaris 10, and other software, does not properly handle calls to pam_setcred when running setuid, which allows local users to overwrite and change the ownership of arbitrary files by setting the KRB5CCNAME environment variable, and then launching a setuid application that performs certain pam_setcred operations.
The bug was discovered 02/11/2009. The weakness was presented 02/13/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0361 since 01/29/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35662 (Debian DSA-1721-1 : libpam-krb5 - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185079 (HP-UX Running PAM Kerberos Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02415)).
Upgrading to version 3.12 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
