Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in PostgreSQL (Database Software). Affected by this issue is the function CREATE TRIGGER of the component Permission Check. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
CREATE TRIGGER in PostgreSQL 8.3.x before 8.3.18, 8.4.x before 8.4.11, 9.0.x before 9.0.7, and 9.1.x before 9.1.3 does not properly check the execute permission for trigger functions marked SECURITY DEFINER, which allows remote authenticated users to execute otherwise restricted triggers on arbitrary data by installing the trigger on an attacker-owned table.
The weakness was shared 02/27/2012 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at postgresql.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0866 since 01/19/2012. The attack can only be initiated within the local network. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68528 (Oracle Linux 5 : postgresql (ELSA-2012-0677)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350665 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for postgresql8: ALAS-2012-082).
