The extension subsystem in Google Chrome before 17.0.963.78 does not properly handle history navigation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging a "Universal XSS (UXSS)" issue.

The weakness was shared 03/08/2012 by Sergey Glazunov with VUPEN as confirmed wargames (Website) via Pwn2Own Contest. The advisory is shared for download at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3046 since 08/09/2011. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

A private exploit has been developed by Sergey Glazunov and been published immediately after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59069 (Safari < 5.1.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165294 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Chromium, v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0374-1)).

Upgrading to version 17.0.963.78 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
