The extension subsystem in Google Chrome before 17.0.963.78 does not properly handle history navigation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by leveraging a "Universal XSS (UXSS)" issue.
The weakness was released 05/09/2012 by Sergey Glazunov with VUPEN as HT5278 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated with Apple. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3046 since 08/09/2011. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
A private exploit has been developed by Sergey Glazunov and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 59069 (Safari < 5.1.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165294 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Chromium, v8 (openSUSE-SU-2012:0374-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at security.gentoo.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
