Ghostscript up to 8.64 icc.c memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Ghostscript up to 8.64 and classified as critical. This affects an unknown function of the file icc.c. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0583. There is no available exploit. The affected component should be upgraded.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ghostscript up to 8.64 (Document Processing Software). This affects an unknown part of the file icc.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple integer overflows in icc.c in the International Color Consortium (ICC) Format library (aka icclib), as used in Ghostscript 8.64 and earlier and Argyll Color Management System (CMS) 1.0.3 and earlier, allow context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer overflow and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code by using a device file for a translation request that operates on a crafted image file and targets a certain "native color space," related to an ICC profile in a (1) PostScript or (2) PDF file with embedded images.

The bug was discovered 03/19/2009. The weakness was presented 03/23/2009 with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is shared at auscert.org.au. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0583 since 02/13/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67823 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 / 5 : ghostscript (ELSA-2009-0345)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155954 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for Ghostscript (ELSA-2009-0345)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49329), Tenable (67823), SecurityFocus (BID 34184†), OSVDB (53255†) and Secunia (SA34373†).
