Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, was found in Sun JRE and JDK up to 1.6.0 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in Java SE Development Kit (JDK) and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 12 and earlier allow remote attackers to access files or execute arbitrary code via (1) a crafted PNG image that triggers an integer overflow during memory allocation for display on the splash screen, aka CR 6804996; and (2) a crafted GIF image from which unspecified values are used in calculation of offsets, leading to object-pointer corruption, aka CR 6804997.
The weakness was published 03/25/2009 by Gregory Fleischer (regenrecht) (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-1097 since 03/25/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/09/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43736 (CentOS 5 : java-1.6.0-openjdk (CESA-2009:0377)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216026 (VMware ESX 4.0 Update for Multiple Packages (VMSA-2009-0016)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8051.
