A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Christophe.varoqui multipath-tools 0.4.8. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Device Mapper. The Device Mapper multipathing driver (aka multipath-tools or device-mapper-multipath) 0.4.8, as used in SUSE openSUSE, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), Fedora, and possibly other operating systems, uses world-writable permissions for the socket file (aka /var/run/multipathd.sock), which allows local users to send arbitrary commands to the multipath daemon.
The weakness was published 03/30/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0115 since 01/13/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67839 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : device-mapper-multipath (ELSA-2009-0411)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116971 (VMware ESX Service Console and vMA Third Party Updates (VMSA-2010-0004)).
