A vulnerability classified as critical was found in VMware ACE 2.5.1. This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the VNnc Codec in VMware Workstation 6.5.x before 6.5.2 build 156735, VMware Player 2.5.x before 2.5.2 build 156735, VMware ACE 2.5.x before 2.5.2 build 156735, and VMware Server 2.0.x before 2.0.1 build 156745 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page or video file, aka ZDI-CAN-435.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2009. The weakness was published 04/06/2009 by Laurent Gaffie as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at seclists.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0909 since 03/14/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 62383 (GLSA-201209-25 : VMware Player, Server, Workstation: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116348 (VMware Hosted Products, VI Client and Patches for ESX (VMSA-2009-0005 )).
Upgrading to version 2.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6814.
