Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.0 (Network Authentication Software). Affected by this issue is the function asn1_decode_generaltime in the library lib/krb5/asn.1/asn1_decode.c of the component DER Encoding. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The asn1_decode_generaltime function in lib/krb5/asn.1/asn1_decode.c in the ASN.1 GeneralizedTime decoder in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) before 1.6.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors involving an invalid DER encoding that triggers a free of an uninitialized pointer.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2009. The weakness was published 04/08/2009 (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-0846 since 03/06/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 41976 (HP-UX PHSS_39765 : HP-UX Running Kerberos, Remote Denial of Service (DoS), Execution of Arbitrary Code (HPSBUX02421 SSRT090047 rev.2)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216010 (VMWare ESXi 4.1.0 Patch Release ESXi410-201010001 Missing (KB1027753)).
Upgrading to version 5-1.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8728.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49749), Tenable (41976), SecurityFocus (BID 34409†), OSVDB (53383†) and Secunia (SA34640†).
