Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in MIT Kerberos up to 5-1.6.3 (Network Authentication Software). Affected by this vulnerability is the function get_input_token. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The get_input_token function in the SPNEGO implementation in MIT Kerberos 5 (aka krb5) 1.5 through 1.6.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (daemon crash) and possibly obtain sensitive information via a crafted length value that triggers a buffer over-read.
The bug was discovered 04/07/2009. The weakness was shared 04/08/2009 with Apple Product Security (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0844 since 03/06/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67837 (Oracle Linux 4 : krb5 (ELSA-2009-0409)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216010 (VMWare ESXi 4.1.0 Patch Release ESXi410-201010001 Missing (KB1027753)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
