The WordPerfect 6.x Converter (WPFT632.CNV, 1998.1.27.0) in Microsoft Office Word 2000 SP3 and Microsoft Office Converter Pack does not properly validate the length of an unspecified string, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted WordPerfect 6.x file, related to an unspecified counter and control structures on the stack, aka "Word 2000 WordPerfect 6.x Converter Stack Corruption Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 04/14/2009. The weakness was released 04/14/2009 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0088 since 01/08/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1975 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 36148 (MS09-010: Vulnerabilities in WordPad and Office Text Converters Could Allow Remote Code Execution (960477)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
