udev before 1.4.1 does not verify whether a NETLINK message originates from kernel space, which allows local users to gain privileges by sending a NETLINK message from user space.
The weakness was disclosed 04/17/2009 by Sebastian Krahmer (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-1185 since 03/31/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Upgrading to version 1.4.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
