A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Foo Labs Xpdf on MacOS (Document Reader Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component JBIG2 Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. Integer overflow in the JBIG2 decoder in Xpdf 3.02pl2 and earlier, as used in Poppler and other products, when running on Mac OS X, has unspecified impact, related to "g*allocn."
The weakness was disclosed 04/23/2009 by Braden Thomas (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-0165 since 01/16/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38692 (Debian DSA-1790-1 : xpdf - multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165632 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:012)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
