A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Exchange 2003 (Groupware Software). This issue affects an unknown part of the component Outlook Web Access. Microsoft Exchange 2003 and Outlook Web Access (OWA), when configured to use NTLM authentication, does not properly reuse HTTP connections, which can cause OWA users to view mailboxes of other users when Kerberos has been disabled as an authentication method for IIS 6.0, e.g. when SharePoint Services 2.0 is installed.
The bug was discovered 11/14/2003. The weakness was shared 01/13/2004 with Microsoft as MS04-002 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at microsoft.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2003-0904 since 11/04/2003. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is necessary for exploitation. Applying the patch MS04-002 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
