A vulnerability was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.01 (Network Management Software) and classified as critical. Integer overflow in ovalarmsrv.exe in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.01, 7.51, and 7.53 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted command to TCP port 2954, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 04/27/2009. The weakness was shared 04/27/2009 by Dyon Balding with Secunia Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-2438 since 05/27/2008. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39383 (HP-UX PHSS_39245 : s700_800 11.X OV NNM7.53 PA-RISC Intermediate Patch 22), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42018 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Remote Code Execution Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8695.
