The SVG Filters implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.28 and 4.x through 10.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, Thunderbird before 3.1.20 and 5.0 through 10.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.8 might allow remote attackers to obtain sensitive information from process memory via vectors that trigger an out-of-bounds read.
The weakness was released 03/13/2012 by Atte Kettunen (Nils) with OUSPG as MFSA2012-14 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-0456 since 01/09/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58344 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:0387)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120029 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0387)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.28, 10.0.3 or 11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
