A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 10.2 (Web Browser). It has been declared as critical. CRLF injection vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 10.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, Thunderbird 5.0 through 10.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.8 allows remote web servers to bypass intended Content Security Policy (CSP) restrictions and possibly conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via crafted HTTP headers.
The weakness was presented 03/13/2012 by Christian Holler (Nils) as MFSA2012-15 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-0451 since 01/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. A single authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68496 (Oracle Linux 6 : thunderbird (ELSA-2012-0388)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120029 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0387)).
Upgrading to version 10.0.3 or 11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
