Integer underflow in CoreGraphics in Apple Mac OS X 10.5 before 10.5.7, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, and iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PDF file that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2009 by Sebastian Apelt (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0155 since 01/16/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38744 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
