Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple QuickTime 7.2 (Multimedia Player Software). This affects an unknown code of the component PICT Opcode Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed elements when parsing (1) Poly type (0x0070 through 0x0074) and (2) PackBitsRgn field (0x0099) opcodes in a PICT image.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was released 11/06/2007 by Ruben Santamarta with ZDI (Website). The advisory is shared at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2007-4676 since 09/05/2007. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27625 (QuickTime < 7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115656 (Apple QuickTime 7.3 Not Installed).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15384. In this case the pattern |00 11 02 FF 0C 00| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12456.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38281), Tenable (27625), SecurityFocus (BID 26345†), OSVDB (54452†) and Secunia (SA27523†).
