Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Apple QuickTime 7.2 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component CTAB Atom Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the QuickTime VR extension 7.2.0.240 in QuickTime.qts in Apple QuickTime before 7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) movie file containing a large size field in the atom header of a panorama sample atom.

The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was disclosed 11/06/2007 by Ruben Santamarta with ZDI (Website). The advisory is available at docs.info.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2007-4675 since 09/05/2007. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27625 (QuickTime < 7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115656 (Apple QuickTime 7.3 Not Installed).

Upgrading to version 7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 13293. In this case the pattern video/quicktime is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9102.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (38282), Tenable (27625), SecurityFocus (BID 26342†), OSVDB (38545†) and Secunia (SA27523†). The entries VDB-3437, VDB-3436, VDB-3439 and VDB-3438 are pretty similar. If you want to get best quality of vulnerability data, you may have to visit VulDB.
