A vulnerability was found in Apple QuickTime 7.2 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects some unknown processing of the component Video File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in Apple QuickTime before 7.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an invalid color table size when parsing the color table atom (CTAB) in a movie file, related to the CTAB RGB values.
The bug was discovered 11/05/2007. The weakness was presented 11/06/2007 by Cody Pierce with TippingPoint (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at docs.info.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2007-4677 since 09/05/2007. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 27625 (QuickTime < 7.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115656 (Apple QuickTime 7.3 Not Installed).
Upgrading to version 7.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at docs.info.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5610.
