The Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) feature in Apple Safari before 5.1.4 on Windows does not properly restrict the characters in URLs, which allows remote attackers to spoof a domain name via unspecified homoglyphs.
The weakness was published 03/12/2012 by Matt Cooley with Symantec as confirmed mailinglist post (Apple Security Announce). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0584 since 01/12/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802814 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120007 (Apple Safari Internationalized Domain Name URI Spoofing Vulnerability (APPLE-SA-2012-03-12-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.1.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
