A vulnerability was found in Joomla CMS up to 2.5.2 (Content Management System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file index.php. The manipulation of the argument jform[groups] with the input value 7 leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The weakness was released 03/15/2012 by Jeff Channell (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at jeffchannell.com. The public release was coordinated with Joomla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1563 since 03/12/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by Charles Fol and been published 6 years after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:index.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. Upgrading to version 2.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
