Integer overflow in Adobe Reader 7 and Acrobat 7 before 7.1.3, Adobe Reader 8 and Acrobat 8 before 8.1.6, and Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9 before 9.1.2 allows attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via a PDF file containing unspecified parameters to the FlateDecode filter, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was published 06/11/2009 by iDefense Labs with iDEFENSE Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1856 since 06/01/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40805 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.1.2 / 8.1.6 / 7.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165648 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SA:2009:035)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9134.
