Mozilla Thunderbird up to 2.0.0.18 Browser Engine GetContentState code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability categorized as critical has been discovered in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 2.0.0.18. Affected by this issue is the function nsEventStateManager::GetContentState of the component Browser Engine. The manipulation results in code injection. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1392. There is no available exploit. It is advisable to upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 2.0.0.18 (Mail Client Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function nsEventStateManager::GetContentState of the component Browser Engine. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The browser engine in Mozilla Firefox 3 before 3.0.11, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.22, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.17 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to (1) nsEventStateManager::GetContentState and nsNativeTheme::CheckBooleanAttr; (2) UnhookTextRunFromFrames and ClearAllTextRunReferences; (3) nsTextFrame::ClearTextRun; (4) IsPercentageAware; (5) PL_DHashTableFinish; (6) nsListBoxBodyFrame::GetNextItemBox; (7) AtomTableClearEntry, related to the atom table, DOM mutation events, and Unicode surrogates; (8) nsHTMLEditor::HideResizers; and (9) nsWindow::SetCursor, related to changing the cursor; and other vectors.

The weakness was presented 06/12/2009 by Jesse Ruderman (Alex) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-1392 since 04/23/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67870 (Oracle Linux 3 / 4 : seamonkey (ELSA-2009-1096)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116484 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1095-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6825.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67870), SecurityFocus (BID 35370†), OSVDB (55144†), Secunia (SA35331†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022376†). See VDB-48599, VDB-48598, VDB-48597 and VDB-48596 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
