A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 3.0.10 (Web Browser). It has been rated as critical. The JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.11, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.22, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.17 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to (1) js_LeaveSharpObject, (2) ParseXMLSource, and (3) a certain assertion in jsinterp.c; and other vectors.
The weakness was published 06/12/2009 by Jesse Ruderman (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1833 since 05/29/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43755 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1095)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116484 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1095-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 7 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6825.
