Use-after-free vulnerability in the Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) implementation in Google Chrome before 17.0.963.83 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to the :first-letter pseudo-element.
The weakness was disclosed 03/21/2012 by Christian Holler (miaubiz) with Google as 113902 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-3050 since 08/09/2011. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58438 (FreeBSD : chromium -- multiple vulnerabilities (330106da-7406-11e1-a1d7-00262d5ed8ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120502 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-09-12-1)).
Upgrading to version 17.0.963.83 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
