Multiple integer overflows in the (1) PL_Base64Decode and (2) PL_Base64Encode functions in nsprpub/lib/libc/src/base64.c in Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.24, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.19 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors that trigger buffer overflows.
The weakness was disclosed 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2463 since 07/15/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
