Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12 and Thunderbird allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or execute arbitrary code via vectors involving double frame construction, related to (1) nsHTMLContentSink.cpp, (2) nsXMLContentSink.cpp, and (3) nsPresShell.cpp, and the nsSubDocumentFrame::Reflow function.

The weakness was shared 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2465 since 07/15/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116528 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2009-34, MFSA 2009-35, MFSA 2009-36, MFSA 2009-37, MFSA 2009-39, MFSA 2009-40)).

Upgrading to version 2.0.0.19 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
