Integer overflow in Apple CoreGraphics, as used in Safari before 4.0.3, Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.12, and Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5.8, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a long text run that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow during font glyph rendering, a related issue to CVE-2009-1194.
The weakness was disclosed 07/22/2009 by Peter Van der Beken (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 480134 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-2468 since 07/15/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43769 (CentOS 5 : firefox (CESA-2009:1162)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116528 (Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (MFSA 2009-34, MFSA 2009-35, MFSA 2009-36, MFSA 2009-37, MFSA 2009-39, MFSA 2009-40)).
Upgrading to version 1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8756.
