A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Fortinet Antivirus 4.2.254.0/10.0.2.7/22.83.00.03 (Anti-Malware Software). This issue affects an unknown code of the component ELF File Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The ELF file parser in eSafe 7.0.17.0, Rising Antivirus 22.83.00.03, Fortinet Antivirus 4.2.254.0, and Panda Antivirus 10.0.2.7 allows remote attackers to bypass malware detection via an ELF file with a modified padding field. NOTE: this may later be SPLIT into multiple CVEs if additional information is published showing that the error occurred independently in different ELF parser implementations.
The weakness was published 03/19/2012 by Suman Jana and Vitaly Shmatikov as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Fortinet. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1439 since 02/29/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Suman Jana / Vitaly Shmatikov and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k.
