Details
A vulnerability was found in Django 0.96/1.0 (Content Management System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component Media Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
The Admin media handler in core/servers/basehttp.py in Django 1.0 and 0.96 does not properly map URL requests to expected "static media files," which allows remote attackers to conduct directory traversal attacks and read arbitrary files via a crafted URL.
The weakness was presented 08/04/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at djangoproject.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2659. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/13/2021). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
