IBM AIX 5.3/6.1 LIB_INIT_DBG access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in IBM AIX 5.3/6.1 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code in the library LIB_INIT_DBG. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

A certain debugging component in IBM AIX 5.3 and 6.1 does not properly handle the (1) _LIB_INIT_DBG and (2) _LIB_INIT_DBG_FILE environment variables, which allows local users to gain privileges by leveraging a setuid-root program to create an arbitrary root-owned file with world-writable permissions, related to libC.a (aka the XL C++ runtime library) in AIX 5.3 and libc.a in AIX 6.1.

The issue has been introduced in 08/01/2004. The weakness was presented 08/05/2009 by Karol Wiesek (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at labs.idefense.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2669 since 08/05/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed by Marco Ivaldi in Shell File and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1830 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64344 (AIX 6.1 TL 3 : libC (IZ56206)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52253), Exploit-DB (9645), Tenable (64344), SecurityFocus (BID 35934†) and Secunia (SA36156†). See VDB-48311 for similar entry. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
