The audio system in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in JDK and JRE 6 before Update 15, and JDK and JRE 5.0 before Update 20, does not prevent access to java.lang.System properties by (1) untrusted applets and (2) Java Web Start applications, which allows context-dependent attackers to obtain sensitive information by reading these properties.

The weakness was shared 08/04/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2670 since 08/05/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40525 (openSUSE Security Update : java-1_6_0-sun (java-1_6_0-sun-1161)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216026 (VMware ESX 4.0 Update for Multiple Packages (VMSA-2009-0016)).

Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
