A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Office 2000/2003/XP (Office Suite Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component Office Web Components. The manipulation of the argument HTMLURL with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in the Office Web Components ActiveX Control in Microsoft Office XP SP3, Office 2000 Web Components SP3, Office XP Web Components SP3, BizTalk Server 2002, and Visual Studio .NET 2003 SP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via crafted property values, aka "Office Web Components Buffer Overflow Vulnerability."
The weakness was published 08/11/2009 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-1534. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/05/2025).
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40562 (MS09-043: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Web Components Could Allow Remote Code Execution (957638)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110101 (Microsoft Office Web Components Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-043)).
