Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The Active Template Library (ATL) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, XP SP2 and SP3, Server 2003 SP2, Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, and Server 2008 Gold and SP2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via vectors related to erroneous free operations after reading a variant from a stream and deleting this variant, aka "ATL Object Type Mismatch Vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 08/12/2009 by iDefense Labs with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2494 since 07/17/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40556 (MS09-037: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Active Template Library (ATL) Could Allow Remote Code Execution (973908)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90515 (Microsoft Active Template Library (ATL) Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-037)).
