A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in SAP Business Objects XI R2. This affects an unknown functionality of the file /help/helpredir.aspx. The manipulation of the argument guide with the input value '+[xss]+'# leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was released 03/08/2012 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The vendor was not involved in the public release. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059.007 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed in HTTP Request and been published 11 hours after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:help/helpredir.aspx it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
