A vulnerability has been found in SAP Business Objects XI R2 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the file /webi/webi_modify.aspx. The manipulation of the argument id with the input value '+[xss]+'# leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was disclosed 03/08/2012 as not defined mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack can be initiated remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed in HTTP Request and been published 11 hours after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. By approaching the search of inurl:webi/webi_modify.aspx it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 52361†) and OSVDB (80640†). The entry VDB-4971 is pretty similar. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
