The pcap_process_pseudo_header function in wiretap/pcap-common.c in Wireshark 1.4.x before 1.4.12 and 1.6.x before 1.6.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a WTAP_ENCAP_ERF file containing an Extension or Multi-Channel header with an invalid pseudoheader size, related to the pcap and pcap-ng file parsers.
The weakness was released 03/27/2012 by Laurent Butti (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1595 since 03/12/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58783 (Fedora 15 : wireshark-1.4.12-1.fc15 (2012-5256)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
