Mozilla Firefox up to 2.0 .4 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). This affects an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.14 does not properly implement certain dialogs associated with the (1) pkcs11.addmodule and (2) pkcs11.deletemodule operations, which makes it easier for remote attackers to trick a user into installing or removing an arbitrary PKCS11 module.

The weakness was presented 09/10/2009 by Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as Bug 509413 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3076. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40932 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox / seamonkey (CESA-2009:1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119088 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1430)).

Upgrading to version 2.0 8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11658.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53161), Exploit-DB (9651), Tenable (40932), SecurityFocus (BID 36343†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022877†). See VDB-49956, VDB-49955, VDB-49954 and VDB-49952 for similar entries. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
