Details
A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.14, and 3.5.x before 3.5.3, does not properly manage pointers for the columns (aka TreeColumns) of a XUL tree element, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML document, related to a "dangling pointer vulnerability."
The weakness was shared 09/10/2009 by Juan Pablo Lopez Yacubian (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as Bug 506871 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3077. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40932 (CentOS 4 / 5 : firefox / seamonkey (CESA-2009:1430)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119088 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1430)).
Upgrading to version 2.0 8 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11658.
