Details
A vulnerability was found in Ghostscript 9.04 (Document Processing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component PostScript Document Handling. The manipulation of the argument OutputFile as part of a Filename String leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
** DISPUTED ** Heap-based buffer overflow in gdevwpr2.c in Ghostscript 9.04, when processing the OutputFile device parameter, allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long file name in a PostScript document. NOTE: as of 20120314, the developer was not able to reproduce the issue and disputed it.
The weakness was disclosed 03/14/2012 by Marcos H. Woehrmann (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.ghostscript.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4875 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Upgrading to version 9.05 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 692856a.diff is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.ghostscript.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74554), SecurityFocus (BID 52864†), OSVDB (80882†) and Secunia (SA47855†). Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
