The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a remote code execution vulnerability. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
nfs.ext in IBM AIX 5.3.x through 5.3.9 and 6.1.0 through 6.1.2 does not properly use the nfs_portmon setting, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions for NFSv4 shares via unspecified vectors.
The issue has been introduced in 08/01/2004. The weakness was released 10/01/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at www-01.ibm.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3517 since 10/01/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/16/2025). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1887 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39026 (AIX 6.1 : bos.net.nfs.client (U823848)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family AIX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120736 (IBM AIX NFS nfs_portmon and Kerberos Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (39026), SecurityFocus (BID 36544†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-34234†).
