A vulnerability classified as very critical was found in Poppler (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects the function PSOutputDev::doImageL1Sep. Integer overflow in the PSOutputDev::doImageL1Sep function in Xpdf before 3.02pl4, and Poppler 0.x, as used in kdegraphics KPDF, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF document that triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 10/21/2009 by Adam Zabrocki with Red Hat (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3606. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 12/07/2024).
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43363 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : koffice (MDVSA-2009:336)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 0.10.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
