Multiple integer overflows in tiff_getimage.c in LibTIFF 3.9.4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted tile size in a TIFF file, which is not properly handled by the (1) gtTileSeparate or (2) gtStripSeparate function, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.

The weakness was disclosed 04/05/2012 by Alexander Gavrun (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at home.gdal.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1173 since 02/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 328 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69672 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtiff (ALAS-2012-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
