A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in LibTIFF 3.9.4 (Image Processing Software). Affected is the function TIFFReadRGBAImage of the file libtiff/tif_getimage.c. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a numeric error vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-189. Multiple integer overflows in tiff_getimage.c in LibTIFF 3.9.4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted tile size in a TIFF file, which is not properly handled by the (1) gtTileSeparate or (2) gtStripSeparate function, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was disclosed 04/05/2012 by Alexander Gavrun (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared for download at home.gdal.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-1173 since 02/14/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 328 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69672 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtiff (ALAS-2012-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166571 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libtiff (SUSE-SU-2013:1639-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
