Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS up to 5.1.1 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component ImageIO. The manipulation as part of a TIFF Image leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple integer overflows in tiff_getimage.c in LibTIFF 3.9.4 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted tile size in a TIFF file, which is not properly handled by the (1) gtTileSeparate or (2) gtStripSeparate function, leading to a heap-based buffer overflow.
The weakness was presented 09/19/2012 by Alexander Gavrun as APPLE-SA-2012-09-19-1 as confirmed posting (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at prod.lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1173 since 02/14/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69672 (Amazon Linux AMI : libtiff (ALAS-2012-65)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166571 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libtiff (SUSE-SU-2013:1639-1)).
Upgrading to version 6.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Google Android as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12462.
