Sun OpenJDK prior 5.0 Subsystem getConfigurations memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability identified as critical has been detected in Sun OpenJDK. This affects the function getConfigurations of the component Subsystem. Performing a manipulation results in memory corruption. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3879. Furthermore, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun OpenJDK. This affects the function getConfigurations of the component Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in the (1) X11 and (2) Win32GraphicsDevice subsystems in Sun Java SE 5.0 before Update 22 and 6 before Update 17, and OpenJDK, have unknown impact and attack vectors, related to failure to clone arrays that are returned by the getConfigurations function, aka Bug Id 6822057.

The weakness was published 11/09/2009 by Peter Vreugdenhil (regenrecht) with iDEFENSE as Bug 530297 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3879. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Java. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67075 (CentOS 5 : java-1.6.0-openjdk (CESA-2009:1584)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155760 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for java-1.6.0-openjdk (ELSA-2009-1584)).

Upgrading to version 5.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8404.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (67075), SecurityFocus (BID 36881†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23978†). Similar entries are available at VDB-4206, VDB-51518, VDB-50752 and VDB-50750. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
